About Gregory A. Payne, MD, PhD

Gregory Payne, MD, PhD, FAHA, is a distinguished cardiologist, scientist, educator, and leader. He serves as Co-Director of the Cardiopulmonary Research Program at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where he pioneers translational cardiovascular research. Additionally, he holds the positions of Assistant Director of the UAB Medical Scientist (MD/PhD) Training Program (MSTP) and Associate Program Director for Research and Quality for the UAB Cardiology Fellowship. Dr. Payne leads the Payne Vascular Research Lab, a nationally recognized integrative research initiative supported by federal funding from the Veterans Affairs and NIH. His lab focuses on discovering novel inflammatory mechanisms underlying endothelial dysfunction and the development of atherosclerosis. Specifically, his research investigates how dysregulation of the extracellular matrix promotes atherosclerotic diseases, including coronary artery disease. Through basic and translational approaches, Dr. Payne’s lab aims to identify clinically relevant disease mechanisms using state-of-the-art discovery platforms and animal modeling. As a general cardiologist, Dr. Payne directs the Stable Coronary Artery Disease Clinic at the Birmingham VA Health Care System, overseeing the medical management of patients with refractory angina and ischemic heart disease.
